How To Avoid Failing JAMB
What is Jamb?
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, or JAMB, is responsible for administering the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, also known as UTME for candidates who seek admission into a tertiary institution in Nigeria. It is the Nigerian entrance examination board for tertiary-level institutions.
It is a Computer Based Test. There are numerous locations and centers in Nigeria that have been authorized by JAMB for the registration of the UTME exam, known as Jamb CBT (Computer Based Test) Centers. These centers/locations spread across Nigeria's 36 states.
The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination has a score range of 0-400 and is only valid for one year. The exam is a knowledge, speed, and accuracy test. It has 180 questions and a 2-hour time limit. Although English language proficiency is a compulsory requirement for all candidates, the subject combinations differ depending on the candidate's desired course of study.
Following the completion of the examination for the year, the board meets to discuss the cut-off marks for universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Typically, universities have the highest cut-off marks, whereas other institutions have lower requirements.
Why is there high failure rate in UTME/JAMB
- Candidates disregard the jamb syllabus/brochure:
The JAMB Syllabus acts as a guidebook by outlining the key points for every subject you've registered in a thorough manner. The brochure contains information that will help you understand the subject combinations and prerequisites for any course you have selected. In order to help you avoid making the wrong decision, it also highlights the numerous institutions that offer your preferred course of study. The information is unnecessary and burdensome in the eyes of the students, who would prefer to concentrate just on the material taught in their schools or information provided by self acclaimed professionals. - Poor study habits
Developing effective study habits is crucial for success in exams and afterwards. Setting up a regular study routine, making a comfortable study space, taking breaks, and being organized are some of the finest habits. Whether you prefer to study for brief periods or for extended periods of time, it's critical to set a schedule that works for you. Furthermore, having a dedicated study area with few distractions can improve focus and productivity. Additionally, taking regular breaks can lower burnout and boost retention. Finally, keeping track of deadlines, assignments, and notes can help you manage your time more effectively and reduce stress. Good study habits can help you succeed in school and beyond. They are a lifelong talent. - Preparation:
Familiarity with exam software and online testing platforms can help to reduce anxiety and increase confidence. It's important to practice using these tools before the exam to ensure a smooth and efficient experience. - Computer Illiteracy:
In today's digital world, computer literacy has become increasingly important for success in exams. Basic computer skills, such as typing, navigating the internet, and using word processing software, are essential for completing exams that are administered online or require the use of a computer. Moreover, being computer literate can also aid in organizing notes, creating study materials, and collaborating with peers, which can lead to better preparation and performance on exams. - Misinformation:
Misinformation about exam details can be a significant problem that can lead to confusion, anxiety, and potentially negative consequences. It's important to rely on official sources of information, such as exam schedules, rules, and procedures, to ensure accuracy and avoid misinformation. Seeking information from unofficial sources or relying on rumors can lead to incorrect information, misinterpretation of exam details, and potentially result in a disadvantage during the exam. - Arriving at exam venues late:
Late arrival to an exam centre can be a stressful situation that can negatively impact exam performance or the exam attendance.Depending on the exam rules, arriving late may result in cancellation of the exam and candidate may have to wait till the next year.In order to make the necessary preparations to get to the exam location on time, it is crucial to find out where your exam centre is before the test day. - Incriminating materials:
Possessing incriminating materials during an exam is a serious academic offense that can lead to disciplinary action and potentially result in failing the exam or even the course. Incriminating materials can include notes, textbooks, electronic devices, or any other materials that provide an unfair advantage over other exam takers. It's important to adhere to exam regulations and avoid any actions that could be seen as cheating or academic misconduct. - Incomplete documents and materials:
Not having complete documentation in hand for an exam can be a stressful situation that can negatively impact exam performance. Depending on the exam rules, not having complete documentation may result in disqualification or a delay in taking the exam. Being prepared and having complete documentation in hand is the best way to avoid these potential issues and ensure the best possible performance on the exam.
In conclusion, success in exams requires preparation, focus, and adherence to exam rules and regulations. Developing good study habits, being computer literate, arriving early to exam centres, avoiding incriminating materials, and relying on official sources of information are all important exam tips to keep in mind. By following these exam tips and being well-prepared, students can feel confident and prepared to tackle exams and achieve their academic goals.
